Steps To Register For Your Exam

So you’ve completed your online drone courses and you now want to take the FAA Remote Pilot Knowledge Exam. What do you do?

It’s a common misunderstanding to assume that you will need a “certificate” from your course provider, but that is not true. In fact, you do not need to take any online course at all in order to apply for your Part 107 remote Pilot Certificate. To get started, just follow these steps.

1. Register at IACRA

Before scheduling your FAA Airman Knowledge Test exam with a PSI testing center, you must establish a Federal Tracking Number (FTN) by clicking the following FAA.gov link. This is an important first-step.

After you pass your exam, it takes about 3-5 business days for your exam results to propagate into the FAA’s Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) system.

You will be notified by email however, you may also revisit the IACRA website daily for updates.

Steps to register on the IACRA website:

  • Part 107 students will select “Applicant” and then click “Agree to Terms of Service and Continue.”
  • Be very careful that you do not make mistakes when completing your application in the IACRA system.
  • The system asks for your height in inches, city of birth, county of birth, and country of birth. All of this information must match the application you completed when you registered to take the exam with PSI.
  • The FAA reports that most delays with remote pilots receiving their temporary certification is due to typos and errors in their application.
  • When prompted, your 17-digit exam ID number will be found on the Airman Knowledge Test Report that you will receive from your testing center after you pass the exam.
  • IACRA will email you when you’re approved, and most students are approved within 3 to 4 days before receiving an email from IACRA.
  • Once a student is active within the IACRA system, and after you are approved by the FAA, you will be given a temporary airman certificate. This certificate will appear as a little green icon box in the IACRA website under your profile.
  • You can click on the icon to print your Temporary Airman Certificate so you can immediately begin legally flying a drone (sUAS) for commercial operations.
  • Within 30 days of being issued your Temporary Airman Certificate, you will receive your official Certification ID Card from the Department of Transportation/Federal Aviation Administration.
  • When you receive your FAA sUAS certification, you should also receive an “address opt-out” letter that permits your physical address from being displayed in the FAA website, in case you prefer to keep that information private on the FAA website.
  • You may update or change that at any time online as well.
